Eduardo, Mexico

 

Eduardo was born in Jalisco, Mexico, and lived there since he was a teen. Before he was done with high school his family decided to come to the United States in search of a better life. They had visited Ohio before, since an uncle lived there, and he came to join him.  Eventually Eduardo went to live in Ohio to work in an egg factory, and later, after Hurricane Katrina, and even more so Hurricane Rita, came close to effecting his livelihood, he moved to Walla Walla. Prior to moving there Eduardo had become addicted to cocaine, a sort of misguided self-medication in reaction to a number of childhood traumas (just to mention one, his uncle drowned to save young Eduardo’s life and he blamed himself for his death). In Walla Walla he started to open up (“I got out of my shell” he said) and decided to get clean, he got his GED, got married, and had a daughter.

Occupation: Construction worker/poet. Wants to pursue an education to work in a drug addiction recovery community center.

Favorite music: Hip-hop (for instance Wu-Tang Clan)

Language challenges: Just a few words, like “vanilla,” when he pronounces it people think he is saying “banana.”

Could do without: When stranger say “Hey amigo!” when they don’t really mean they are friends and people have a widely different attitude depending on what he is wearing: when he is coming back from work, with paint on his cloths for instance, people treat him as if he is less than nothing and might be rude to him, while when he is dressed up he no longer looks like the stereotypical “poor/brown/maybe illegal Mexican”

Favorite expressions: English “dope” as in “cool”

                                  Spanish: “Orale” (“right on!”)

Objects:

• Hat “find refuge in the sea”: he likes hats and loves the ocean, which keeps him grounded

• Shell: also representative of the ocean, which was close to his home in Mexico, and has a calming effect on him

• Notebook: Eduardo writes poems and is also writing a book about his experience in recovery

Eduardo nació en Jalisco, México, y vivió allí desde su adolescencia. Antes de terminar la escuela secundaria, su familia decidió venir a Estados Unidos en busca de una vida mejor. Habían visitado Ohio antes, ya que un tío vivía allí, y fueron a reunirse con él. Con el tiempo, Eduardo se fue a vivir a Ohio para trabajar en una fábrica de huevos, y más tarde, después de que el huracán Katrina, y más aún el huracán Rita, estuvo a punto de afectar su sustento, se mudó a Walla Walla. Antes de mudarse allí, Eduardo se había vuelto adicto a la cocaína, una especie de automedicación equivocada en reacción a una serie de traumas infantiles (solo por mencionar uno, su tío se ahogó para salvar la vida del joven Eduardo, y él se culpó a sí mismo por su muerte). En Walla Walla comenzó a abrirse (“Salí de mi caparazón”, dijo Eduardo) y decidió limpiarse, obtuvo su GED, se casó y tuvo una hija.

Ocupación: Trabajador de la construcción / poeta. Quiere seguir una educación para trabajar en un centro comunitario de recuperación de adicción a las drogas.

Desafíos de idioma: solo unas pocas palabras, como " vanilla ", cuando lo pronuncia, la gente piensa que está diciendo" banana ".

Podría prescindir: cuando un extraño dice "¡Oye amigo!" cuando en realidad no quieren decir que son amigos. Otra cosa es que hay gente que tiene una actitud muy diferente dependiendo de lo que lleve puesto: cuando vuelve del trabajo, con pintura en la ropa, por ejemplo, la gente lo trata como si fuera menos que nada y son grosero con él, mientras que cuando está vestido engalanado ya no se ve como el estereotipado "pobre / moreno / quizás mexicano ilegal"

• Sombrero “encuentra refugio en el mar”: le gustan los sombreros y ama el océano, lo que lo mantiene enraizado

• Concha: también representativa del océano, que estaba cerca de su casa en México, y tiene un efecto calmante en él

• Cuaderno: Eduardo escribe poemas y también está escribiendo un libro sobre su experiencia en recuperación
